The pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is the causal agent of pine wilt disease. It was introduced in Japan in the early 1900`s, from North America and spread during the 1980’s to China, Taiwan and South Korea, where it subsequently caused serious damage to pine forests. More recently, the pinewood nematode was found in Portugal and Spain, and can now be regarded as among the most consequential forest pests in Eurasia.
